New School Guide Assists
Volunteer
Attorneys Visiting Classrooms
~ Free Resource for MSBA Members ~
By Janet Stidman Eveleth
Every year,
hundreds of
Maryland
lawyers visit schools across the state and talk to classes of students
about the law. Many volunteer through the Maryland State Bar Association,
local bar association and MSBA’s Citizenship Law-Related Education Program
in Maryland Schools (CLREP). Every May, a large group of attorneys
commemorate Law Day by visiting school students to discuss timely legal
topics that have an impact upon youth. Frequently, these volunteers
contact MSBA and CLREP for materials, lesson plans and other resources to
help them prepare for these school engagements.
Now, attorneys
visiting classrooms have a new school resource to help them prepare for
and master school presentations for all grade levels and age groups. “An
Attorney’s Guide to Bringing the Law to Life,” published by CLREP,
offers helpful hints for attorneys visiting school students. This valuable
resource, free to all MSBA members, covers everything from lesson plans
and common student questions to activities and engaging catalysts for
discussions. It also provides tips for preparation and ways to connect law
in the school’s curriculum.
“This guide is
designed to create interactive experiences that volunteer attorneys can
use to engage students and bring the law to life for them,” explains CLREP
Director Ellery “Rick” Miller. “Instead of just talking, attorneys can use
this guide to introduce activities to engage in with students as they
explain the law and the role of attorneys and judges.”
MSBA members may
contact CLREP for a free copy of this new school visit guide, at (410)
706-5360. It may also be found on MSBA’s website (www.msba.org) as
well as CLREP’s website (www.clrep.org) and may be downloaded in
its entirety.
