Maryland Bar Journal Wins Top National Honor
The Maryand Bar Journal and its Editor, Janet Stidman Eveleth,
have received a top national honor. The Maryland Bar Journal,
MSBA’s bi-monthly magazine, has been honored as the top state bar
magazine in the country for 2002. Eveleth attributes this acclamation
to MSBA’s hard-working Editorial Advisory Board (EAB), which oversees
the production of the Maryland Bar Journal, and the many
talented MSBA attorneys who serve as the Journal’s volunteer
writers.
On
Friday, October 17, 2003,
the Journal and Eveleth received a Luminary Award for
Excellence in Publications, presented by the Communications
Section of the National Association of Bar Executives. The award was
presented to “Janet Stidman Eveleth and the Maryland Bar Journal
for the publication that best exemplifies excellence in writing,
editing and design in meeting the needs of the publication’s targeted
legal audience.”
This is the third Luminary Award the MSBA’s magazine has won in the
last six years. In 1998, the Maryland Bar Journal also captured
the top state bar association magazine award for large bar
associations, and the Journal was honored in 2000 in the
Special Publications category for its January/February 2000 Special
Millennium issue.
This year, the Journal won the 2002 competition for large bar
associations with memberships of 15,000 or more, competing with 40+
other bar association magazines. The Journal’s 2002 themes
included its November/December “America at War” issue, which was a
special tribute to 9/11. The year’s other themes included “Privacy in
the Workplace,” “Protecting Consumer Rights,” “Family Law: Picking Up
the Pieces,” “Protecting Our Environment” and “Sliding into
Bankruptcy.”
Eveleth credits the EAB, led by Elizabeth Mary Kameen, with the
ongoing success of the Journal. “This dedicated group of
volunteer attorneys works closely with me to ensure each issue of the
Journal meets the high standards the MSBA has set for its
magazine,” she declares. She also thanks all of the MSBA volunteers
who write such excellent articles for the magazine and the Sections
and Committees who support the theme issues the magazine features.
Every year, the Luminary Award is presented to a Bar Association
publication and its Editor for “consistent quality in writing and
readability, quality, clarity and effectiveness of design and format;
success in meeting stated objectives; reaching the targeted audience;
and the effective use of available resources.” The Journal
began publishing theme issues on a bi-monthly basis in January 1988.
The magazine was rated one of MSBA’s top member benefits in the MSBA
1998 membership survey.
Eveleth has served as the Editor of the Maryland Bar Journal
since she joined the MSBA as the Director of Communications in 1987.
She has written an article in every issue of the Journal since
January 1988. She is proud to bring this honor to the MSBA.
