Robert R. Niccolini |
Robert R. Niccolini has been
appointed vice chair of the Labor and Employment Practice Group, a
subgroup of the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) which addresses
the health care industry’s concerns related to employment law and other
labor and employment issues. Kathleen McDermott has been appointed
Vice-Chair of the AHLA’s Fraud & Abuse Practice Group. McDermott is a
partner in the Health Law and White Collar Practice Groups in the
Washington, D.C., office of Blank Rome LLP.

Youshea A. Berry, a congressional
fellow in the Office of Congressman Charles B. Rangel (NY-15), has been
selected to lead a volunteer team of American students and young
professionals on a women’s business development project this summer in
Elmina, Ghana. In collaboration with a Ghanaian grassroots organization,
the team will organize the women of coastal Ghanaian migratory fishing
communities by facilitating technical innovations, the resulting incomes
from which will be used to promote further economic and community
development.

County John J. McCarthy has been installed as President of the Bar
Association of Montgomery County, Maryland. J. Kirby Fowler, Jr.,
has been appointed president of the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore,

OberKaler has named its annual charitable
giving program the “John Chandler Baldwin Community Grants Program”
in honor of the firm’s outgoing chairman.
James Rosner has been elected
Pro-Bono Partner for the law firm of Whiteford, Taylor & Preston, L.L.P.
The Honorable Richard C. Goodwin has
transferred to the Office of Hearings, U.S. Department of Transportation,
in Washington, D.C., as a U.S. Administrative Law Judge. Goodwin was
previously Hearing Office Chief Administrative Law Judge for the Social
Security Administration, Office of Hearings and Appeals, in Fresno,
California.

The University of Baltimore Alumni
Association has chosen Michael C. Hodes to receive its H. Mebane
Turner Service Award; the Alumni Association also bestowed its Honorary
Alumnus Award upon Joseph K. Pokempner. The awards recognizes
volunteers who demonstrate a commitment to the University.

Jeffrey P. Marston has become a
partner in the law firm of Lotstein Buckman, LLP. Marston practices
nationally in matters relating to mortgage banking, real estate finance

Washington, D.C., attorney Mark T.
McDermott has been reappointed as the legislative chairman for the
American Academy of Adoption Attorneys.

| John E. Smathers |
Laurel attorney John E. Smathers has
returned to practice after serving a tour of duty as an Army Reserve
captain in Iraq. A partner in the firm of McGowan Cecil & Smathers LLC,
Smathers (right, in a June 2003 photo taken in Baghdad) is the recipient
of two Purple Hearts, four Bronze Stars and an Army commendation medal. He
suffered multiple injuries to his left arm and his knees after his convoy
was ambushed south of Baghdad on February 21, 2004. Smathers, who
specializes in civil litigation, continues to practice law while
recovering from his injuries; he is currently undergoing further
operations and physical therapy.
