Make Plans to Attend the 7th Annual Solo & Small Firm Conference
By Pat Yevics

It is hard to believe that this will be the 7th Annual Solo and Small Firm Conference. Again this year we have worked very hard to come up with a program that will address the needs of solo and small firm practitioners throughout the state. The Pre-Conference Boot Camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2005, at the BWI Marriott, followed by the full-day Solo Conference, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, November 5, 2005, also at the BWI Marriott.

Last year’s Pre-Conference Boot Camp was a big hit, so we are doing it again this year. The two tracks for this year’s Boot Camp are “How to Start a Solo Practice” and “Powerful Presentations”.

The topics for the “How to Start a Solo Practice” track include “Business Aspects of Starting a Solo Practice”; “How to Avoid Grievance and Malpractice” and “Practical Tips to Start Out Right”. Those who are new solos can attend sessions on technology and marketing on Saturday to help them with their practice.

The second track on Friday is “Powerful Presentations: PowerPoint Presentation for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners”, an amazing program presented by Craig Ball, Esq., a solo practitioner from Texas. His program was one of the most talked about sessions at the American Bar Association’s Tech Show in Chicago; I saw it there and again at the Indiana State Bar Association’s Meeting. Ball is a great presenter. If you do any type of presentations in court, for clients, for programs, you need to see this session.

Each of Friday’s sessions can accommodate only 50 attendees. The programs are designed to present topics that will prepare attendees for the full-day Solo Conference on Saturday, November 5.

Saturday’s full-day Conference will feature five tracks: “Practice Perfect”, “Just for the Tech of It”, “Software Programs for Solo Practitioners”, “MICPEL” and “Cost-Effective Litigation for Solo and Small Firms”.

The cost for either of the Friday programs is $60 (again, there are only 50 seats available for each of the Friday sessions, so register early). The cost to attend the Saturday program is once again only $95 and includes continental breakfast, lunch and a CD-ROM of all materials. The cost to attend both Friday and Saturday is $135, a discount of $20 off the registration cost for both days (you must register for both sessions at the same time to receive the discount).

Once again, the registration fee includes all materials on CD-ROM. In addition, registered attendees will be able to view and print any or all materials two weeks prior to the program. Unlike last year, printed materials will be available for an additional cost of $25. If you want to be guaranteed of having printed materials, you must register by October 17 (the cost for printed materials after October 17 is $50).

Registration is available online and the full brochure will be mailed after Labor Day. In addition, anyone who registers before October 15 is eligible for a drawing on a portable scanner.

Remember, solo does not mean alone. This is best place for information for solo and small firm practitioners.
