Jan I. Berlage has been elected to the Board of Directors of Heroes Helping
Heroes, an after-school mentoring program for teenage boys in East Baltimore.
Berlage is also a member of the MSBA Board of Governors.
John H. Denick, former chair of MSBA's Business Law Section, has completed
a course training him to be a mediator; as of now, he is allowed to hear business
and real estate disputes.
E. Scott Johnson, chair of the Intellectual Property Practice at Ober Kaler,
has been named to the
"Who's Who Legal Trademarks USA 2006", published by Law Business Research
Ltd.
Paul S. Sugar, Chair of Ober Kaler's Pro Bono program, has been appointed
to the board of the Maryland Volunteer Lawyer Service through June 2007.
The University Of Maryland School Of Law's Black Law Student Association
has named Craig Thompson
"Alumnus of the Year" for his commitment to black law students through such
activities as mentoring students and speaking at colleges and national conventions.
Baltimore County Fire Department executive officer Janet Thomas Johnson has
been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Community College of Baltimore
County Foundation, which coordinates college-wide fundraising initiatives within
the private sector.
Health Care for the Homeless has named Shirley Bigley LaMotte the recipient
of its President's Award for her exceptional pro bono legal services to the
organization.
DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary US LLP has named James D. Mathias the new Litigation
Chair in the firm's Baltimore office, where he will oversee the function and
general management of the litigation practice.

Partner, while adding Meighan Griffin as an Associate in the Litigation Section.

Neil R. Sarin has become an Assistant Attorney General in the Child and Family
