Young Lawyers Come to Baltimore for ABA Conference

~MSBA Young Lawyers Section hosts event~

Next month, young lawyers across the nation will congregate in Baltimore for the American Bar Association's (ABA) Young Lawyers Division's (YLD) Fall 2006 Conference on October 19-21, at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Over 500 attorneys are expected to turn out for this event, hosted by the Maryland State Bar Association's (MSBA) Young Lawyers Section. MSBA is one of the sponsors of this national gathering, which prepares young lawyers for future leadership roles in the legal profession.

The conference traditionally focuses on CLE, professional development, bar leadership skills and public service. Highlights include a broad array of educational programs, a luncheon at Baltimore's Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture featuring Maryland's Chief Judge Robert M. Bell and social events at landmarks like the National Aquarium and the B&O Railroad Museum.

Educational offerings include practical and substantive information with sessions on everything from administrative law, the anatomy of a trial, digital discovery and ethical dilemmas to law firm cultures and the transition from government law to private practice. In the broader sense, the young lawyers may also opt for media training and financial planning. Much of the conference is devoted to leadership skills and professional development and to public service.

"Choose Law: A Profession for All," the 2006-2007 ABA Young Lawyers Public Service Project, will be unveiled at this Baltimore Conference. This year, young lawyers across the country are committed to educating 9th grade students about the importance of the legal profession and the historic contribution of lawyers in society. Through a video, written curriculum, dedicated website and attorney volunteers, this comprehensive public service effort will promote diversity by encouraging young people of color to consider careers as lawyers.

"We are very excited about hosting the YLD conference in Baltimore," declares Hughie Hunt, Chair of MSBA's Young Lawyers Section. "Our Host Committee, led by John Murphy, has put together a fantastic program with events at the Havana Club, the Reginald Lewis Museum, the B&O Railroad Museum and the Aquarium. We are hoping to see all the young lawyers in our area participate. Registration for the conference is free, but you have to be registered to attend the programming and you don't have to be a member of the ABA to register. We hope to see you all at the conference!"

The ABA Young Lawyers Division's Fall 2006 Conference is open to all young lawyers in Maryland and there is no fee. Attendees may select the educational programs and events they wish to attend. There is a separate charge for each social event. Attorneys may register for the conference online at www.abanet.org/yld.
