SEPTEMBER 2010

Readabilityis a simple tool that makes reading on the Web more enjoyable by removing the clutter around what you're reading.  It makes it easier to read and print without all the clutter.  Check this out. http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/

DISPOSABLE EMAIL ADDRESSES
Did you ever wish you could have an email address that you would only use for a short period of time for retail confirmations or to help cut down on spam and then have the address disappear?  There a number of site which provide that service.  A list of the top seven and short reviews of each is available at About.com.  (http://email.about.com/od/disposableemailservices/tp/disposable.htm)

EASILY TRANSFER LARGE FILES FOR FREE WITHOUT REGISTERING
Many email servers will not accept large files but we often have to send large files.  We Transfer (www.wetransfer.com) will allow you upload up to a 2 gigabyte file to the site's secure server.  It will send a message to an email and your recipient can then download them whenever they wish. Best part is that it's easy, free and doesn't require registration.

FASTCASE CREATES ONLINE USER GUIDE FOR MEMBERS
Fastcase, free online legal research for MSBA Members only, has created a detailed user guide(http://www.msba.org/docs/Fastcase_user_guide.pdf)  as well as a quick reference guide (http://www.msba.org/docs/Fastcase_user_guide.pdf)

THE DANGERS OF GEOTAGGING REVEALED
If you use your smartphone to take photos and then send them to friends/family/clients, you are giving your exact location.  There are dangers in this and they are explained in a NY Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/12/technology/personaltech/12basics.html?_r=2) from August 11, 2010. 

In addition, there is a site, ICanStalkYou.com (www.icanstalkyou.com)  that will explain how to disable this on your phone.  This is critical if you have children or family who send these photos.

MARYLAND CHAPTER OF ASSOCIATION OF LEGAL ADMINISTRATORS
The MD Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators is an organization for administrators/office managers of law firms of all sizes.  It also offers assistance with hiring administrators.  It has regular luncheon meetings with topics on management and technology for law firms.

TECH SCAMS ARE STILL TARGETING LAWYERS
Please be very cautious when doing business over the internet as there are still many scams targeting lawyers.  Here are some sites that have reported on them.

KEEP UP TO DATE WITH CYBER SCAMS
The FBI has a list of all cyber scams and you can sign up to get alerts when the site is updated.  This site might cause you to lose your faith in humanity but better safe than sorry.

NEED DATA FROM STATES
If your firm, your client or your case needs information about how different states compare in any number of categories, the website Statemaster may give you the information that you need.  It is "a unique statistical database which allows you to research and compare a multitude of different data on US states."
