MAC USERS

Mac users unite!
A friend reminded me that the new Mac run on the dual
Intel processors so that you can run those applications directly on
your Mac. Two additional pieces of software make that even more useful.
One is an Apple product called BootCamp (http://www.apple.com/macosx/
bootcamp/). This allows you to boot your system up in either Mac
OS
10.x or in Windows.
The other is Parallels Desktop for Mac (http://www.parallels.com/en/
products/desktop/) which allows you to run both OS 10.x and Windows
simultaneously and switch back and forth similar to switching between
accounts on the same computer. From what I understand, Parallels is
the far more elegant solution.
I plan on testing both products using a variety of the case
management products starting in the new year (i.e. after I give
myself the necessary Christmas presents) before making a decision for
my practice. I'll let you and others know how it goes.
As for the rest of the paper less office solution, all of that is
available on your Mac now i.e. loads of scanners, Adobe Acrobat, MS
Office or Wordperfect Office Suite, Quicken/QuickBooks, Now Up to
Date/Contacts, etc. etc.

I encourage other solos and small firm practitioners to try a mac. I
was using a PC exclusively as of a year ago and the switch has made me
much more efficient. The current operating system, Tiger, is leaps ahead
of XP and even Vista. With the upcoming release of 10.5 (leopard), you
will see features that are not only elegant, but will help you in your
practice. Time Machine is but one example. Here is a link to a quick
video regarding this feature for those of you who may be interested in
unplugging from the matrix.
