· It is good
to see the continuing positive, informative and interesting presentation
of "Tax Talk". When Marilyn Nelson was editor we knew that our
submissions would be carefully (critically) reviewed. Thankfully, that
hasn’t changed with Bryan Young’s leadership. These people, like all
members of the Tax Section Council, care about what they are doing and its
impact on others. Good things happen with good people!
· Coming up
is the MSBA Mid-Year Technology Showcase where we are sponsoring a program
entitled "Don’t Get Caught in the Net: Tax & Business Issues of
ECommerce," on March 3rd at
1:30 pm. Our Technology Committee, with Elissa Borges at the helm,
announces substantial changes in the format of our website, and after our
last Council meeting, the availability of our listserv to all members of
the MSBA. If interested, go to www.msba.org
for more information.
· Marilyn
Nelson, Chair of the Program Committee, reports a profit of $68.84 from
the "Fellowship Dinner" on November 16, 2000. We had a good
dinner and an entertaining speaker, Hank Gutman. On April 25,
2001, she has scheduled the "Shulbank Dinner" at Camden
Yards. On that occasion we will have as our speaker, Donald Lubick, former
Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Tax Policy.
· For the
Annual Meeting in Ocean City (June 2001), she hopes to provide a one hour
presentation regarding Federal Tax Changes and a second hour of discussion
which will deal with Retirement for Lawyers.
· The Tax
Section is one of the MSBA’s more active Sections in both services to
its members and public awareness. In addition to the traditional role of
the State Legislation Committee, Andrea Gillespie (Chair) is leading a
task force of persons representing both the MACPA and the Section of
Taxation of the MS BA. This group will seek to discuss possible concerns
with the Office of Comptroller. Once in place, it is thought that this
group and their progeny can provide helpful communication for years to
come. Evelyn Pasquier, Vice Chair of the Committee, is attempting to stay
abreast of all legislation impacting our individual and group functions.
Many of her discoveries will be provided in the next issue.
· I am
always impressed with the enthusiasm and willingness of Maryland tax
attorneys to share their time and thoughts when dealing with the Section.
We encourage participation by all, and direct your attention to the last
issue of "Tax Talk" to reach us by telephone. We thank everyone
for the assistance and courtesy extended thus far this busy year.
Please have a safe and happy Winter 2001
