Tax Excellence Award
The Honorable L. Paige Marvel

The Tax Excellence Award is presented annually to an attorney, law school professor, public official or member of the judiciary who exemplifies professional, academic or public service excellence, integrity, compassion and commitment in the areas of practicing, teaching or developing tax law or tax policy.

The Taxation Section of the Maryland Bar Association is pleased to announce that the Honorable L. Paige Marvel was awarded this year’s Tax Excellence Award on May 14, 2002 at the Annual Shulbank Dinner and Program.

Judge Marvel has demonstrated a special dedication and commitment toward advancing the practice of tax law through her many years of work in private practice in the Maryland area, as well as through her current service as a judge on the United States Tax Court. In addition, Judge Marvel was instrumental in redesigning and revising the tax procedure provisions of Maryland’s tax laws as part of the comprehensive revision of the Maryland Annotated Code.

Judge Marvel graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1974. She was in private practice from 1974 to 1998 with the following Maryland law firms: Garbis, Marvel and Junghans, 1974-86; Melnicove, Kaufman, Weiner, Smouse and Garbis, 1986-88 (Member); and Venable, Baetjer and Howard, 1988-98 (Partner). Judge Marvel’s professional affiliations and associations include the following: Member, ABA; Fellow, American Bar Foundation; Fellow, American College of Tax Counsel; Member, American Law Institute; Member, Maryland State Bar Assn.; Fellow, Maryland Bar Foundation; and Member, Loyola/Notre Dame Library, Inc., Board of Trustees.

In addition, Judge Marvel is a former Chair of the MSBA Tax Section, served in various leadership capacities within the ABA Section of Taxation, and served as an advisor to the Graduate Tax Program at the University of Baltimore Law School and as a member of the University of Maryland Law School Board of Visitors.
