St. Mary's County Bar Association

The St. Mary’s County Bar Association (SMCBA) has been busy during the first half of 2012.

On May 1, 2012, SMCBA celebrated Law Day at the Southern Maryland Community College by inviting nonprofits, local law enforcement, legal service providers, and other entities to set up kiosks to answer questions and hand out materials to members of the general public and community college students.  To liven up the event, SMCBA hosted a happy hour for attorneys and volunteers after the event and held a raffle to benefit the scholarship program.

Also in the spring, the SMCBA proudly presented $1,000 scholarships to two local graduating high school students planning to pursue higher education in a law-related field. Congratulations to Kyle Crandall and Rachel Riser!

Throughout the remainder of 2012, the SMCBA will continue to host a series of Meet a Lawyer in libraries across the county to educate lay individuals on a number of different legal topics.  The first session, hosted by local public defenders and a defense attorney, focused on what to do when stopped by the police. Upcoming sessions will include topics such as bankruptcy and wills/trusts.  Contact Eric Brennan at smc.bar.association@hotmail.com for more information or to volunteer.

Although business for the SMCBA tends to wind down for the summer, the Association hosts an annual Bar Crab Feast – date and location to be determined.  Please contact Eric Brennan at smc.bar.association@hotmail.com for more details if you are interested in attending.

Looking to the fall, the SMCBA looks forward to working with YLS on its upcoming Pro Bono Legal Advice Fair [insert link to Pro Bono Committee Writeup], which will be funded in part by the American Bar Association on behalf of its Young Lawyers Division through the Fund for Justice. Full event details are forthcoming. If you are interested in serving on the planning committee or volunteering during the event, please contact YLS Pro Bono Committee Co-Chair Renée E. Hood at renee.e.hood@gmail.com to discuss ways to get involved.

SMCBA invites all YLS Members to stop by a future SMCBA event, including its upcoming Summer Bar Crab Feast later this summer, to network with your fellow attorneys and learn about ways to get involved in the association.  We hope to see you soon! For more information about the SMCBA, please contact Eric Brennan at smc.bar.association@hotmail.com.
