Join the MSBA for the newest presentation of 20 Hour Mediation Training in Child Custody and Visitation, on April 21-23, 2020 in Columbia, MD!

Trainers Barbara Williams and Ellen Kandell have 30+ years of experience in mediation practice, conflict resolution training, and teaching. Training format includes small group exercises, discussions, coached role plays, video, and lecture.

The training agenda covers all topics required to satisfy the training requirements under Maryland Judicial Rule 9-205(c) including:
Maryland law regarding separation, divorce, and annulment; child custody and
visitation; child and spousal support; and, the interrelationship of parenting
arrangements and child support; family systems and child development theory;
emotional aspects of separation and divorce on adults and children; screening for
and addressing power imbalances, intimidation, and domestic violence; and,
strategies for safely terminating mediation when termination is warranted. In
addition, the agenda allocates time to the consideration of ethical questions in
the practice of family mediation.

This training is designed to accomplish 4 goals:

1. To introduce attendees to all topics required under 9-205(c);
2. To familiarize attendees with the practice of facilitative mediation in the
context of developing parenting plans;
3. To provide attendees the opportunity to practice their skills in role plays
coached by experienced family mediators; and,
4. To provide attendees the opportunity to consider ethical questions that
sometimes arise when serving as mediator in the context of parenting plan
development.
