The mission of MDAWALT is to educate attorneys and non-attorneys on labor trafficking and employment issues, and provide valuable resources to the vulnerable population, as well as attorneys and other organizations devoted to helping the vulnerable population. The Fellows, through the project, have partnered with local community organizations to improve and facilitate the administration of justice and promote the diffusion of legal knowledge.
2012 – 2013: Heroes on the Half Shell
The MSBA’s 2012-2013 Leadership Academy Class developed a program titled “Heroes on the Half Shell,” which aimed to generate public awareness regarding the critical state of the Chesapeake Bay and contribute to the solution. The fellows created a permanent Oyster Exhibit at the Maryland Science Center and engaged students of four Baltimore City Schools in an oyster shell collection competition, after which they were treated to a trip to the Maryland Science Center. Through their project, they reached out to over 200 5th grade students and collected 9,280 oyster shells. Those shells will make homes for 92,800 new oysters that, when mature, will filter 4,640,000 gallons of Bay water per day!
