The MSBA Construction Law Section brings together Maryland lawyers who practice construction litigation or construction law related to real estate transactions with a variety of educational and social activities; fosters camaraderie and professionalism among construction law practitioners through related events; and promotes a higher caliber of legal practice among Section members – and across the Bar, generally – through its sponsorship of educational programs, updates on developments in law and legislation, and written materials and resources for practitioners.

May 2, 2017: MSBA Construction Section – 2017 Procurement Law Update

  • On May 2, 2017, the Section held a program reviewing and discussing the State’s current Procurement Reform efforts stemming from Governor Hogan’s February 10, 2016 Executive Order which established a commission to review and modernize state procurement. The program provided information as to the “how’s and why’s” that lead to the ultimate recommendations handed down by the commission, a review of the legislation produced by the commission, and a forecast of what the future will hold for those conducting business with the State under these new rules. The Section extends warm thanks to each of the programs speakers – Scott A. Livingston, Esquire of Rifkin Weiner Livingston, LLC; Stanley Turk, Esquire former Assistant Attorney General, Chief Counsel, Contract Litigation Unit; and Michael Haifley, Deputy Chief Procurement Officer, Maryland Department of Transportation – for their insight and commentary.

March 9, 2017: Construction Law Institute 2017: Building the Foundation

  • On March 9, 2017, the Construction Law Section presented its most recent installment of the Construction Law Institute series of programs. This version – sub-titled “Building the Foundation” – was accompanied by the recent update to the Construction Law Deskbook. The program presented four specific topics: Condominium and New Home Warranties and Rights of Action; Labor and Employment Law; Insurance Coverage; and Change and Extra Work.
