Everybody experiences personal or professional difficulties at one point or another. MSBA provides free, confidential counseling as part of our Lawyer Assistance Program, because we believe in the value and worth of our members. We help lawyers, judges, law students, and their families through personal or work-related challenges – no matter how severe. MSBA supports the “whole person” – including your physical and psychological health.

Some of our services include:

  • Confidential phone lines
  • Assessment, referral, and short-term counseling
  • Intervention assistance and planning
  • Mentorships for peer support
  • Bar application assistance
  • Twelve-step support group
  • Education and orientations to the legal community

Our services include help for a broad range of problems and personal concerns, including: wellness, depression, marital and family issues, alcohol and drug abuse, stress and burnout, career concerns, gambling, addiction, compulsive spending, eating disorders, work/life balance, and bereavement.

If you are concerned about another lawyer, you can make a confidential referral to the Lawyer Assistance Program.


Lawyer Assistance Program Committee


The Lawyer Assistance Program Committee oversees the services that MSBA provides for lawyers in need. Since 1981, LAP has helped lawyers dealing with everything from drug and alcohol abuse and depression, to chronic stress and family issues.
