MSBA’s 2022-2023 Leadership Academy is proud to present its Spring 2023 Service Project – The Law on the Game.
The Law on the Game symposium will focus on the forthcoming Jordan McNair Safe and Fair Play Act, specifically the legislation’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) provisions and their impact on student athletes. This half-day symposium will provide student athletes and their parents with an opportunity to learn from experts and participate in workshops designed to equip them with information, tools, and resources that will help them as they seek to take advantage of NIL opportunities.
The symposium is presented by the Maryland State Bar Association’s 2022-2023 Leadership Academy Fellows. Each year, the Maryland State Bar Association (“MSBA”), composed of over 20,000 lawyers and judges, selects a diverse class of up to 15 young lawyers to become MSBA Leadership Academy Fellows. Over the course of 12 months, Leadership Academy Fellows (the “Fellows”) attend workshops and participate in substantive programming aimed at cultivating their leadership skills, to the end that they may be stellar leaders within the profession. As part of their training, the Fellows are tasked with designing and implementing a public service project to address a pressing public need of their choice and presenting it to the legal community.
This year’s Fellows are excited to present the Law on the Game symposium as their service project. Due to rapid, expansive changes to the NIL landscape, it is imperative that student athletes know their rights and understand best practices in order to avoid falling victim to predatory practices. The Fellows will support student athletes in this way by providing targeted education, engagement, and access to resources.
