PLEASE NOTE THAT THE GALA HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO SPRING 2022: The Chief Judge Barbera Retirement Event Planning Committee, chaired by Judge Shannon Avery, in consultation with the MSBA and with full concurrence by Chief Judge Barbera, has determined that although a good portion of the Sept. 9 event was intended to be held outdoors, with vaccinations required, proceeding with a gathering of 800+ while witnessing rising levels of Delta-variant transmission would detract from the intended energy and hopes for a celebratory evening.
Prior to reaching this difficult conclusion, Chief Judge Barbera was contacted and shared the following. “Throughout this entire pandemic, we have sought to model best practices and have remained focused on safeguarding the health of all who enter and support our courts. A better moment will exist in the future for us to come together without undermining the important message to both the profession and the public about remaining vigilant at the moment we find ourselves in today.”
As a result, the event will be postponed to a later date with details to be announced in the coming weeks. Sponsors, registrants and event partners will maintain their previously secured role and participation level in the event to be held. Your access and privileges associated with your participation level will not be affected.
Join us for an evening celebrating the notable achievements and the retirement of Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera, who has worked tirelessly during her tenure to increase the courts’ efficiency, promote racial justice in the civil and criminal justice system, and most recently, expertly navigate the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic in Maryland courts.
MSBA members will have an opportunity to connect with colleagues and judges from a variety of practice sectors and jurisdictions throughout the evening. The event includes an outdoor cocktail hour, dinner and presentations in a ventilated ballroom, and outdoor dessert bar. If there is inclement weather, the pre- and post-dinner activities will take place in a large, well-ventilated space inside the venue.
Venue: College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, 3501 University Blvd E., Hyattsville, MD 20783 US
Note: We have had an overwhelming response to the event and reached capacity in the main ballroom. We have expanded the event to accommodate more individuals and firms in an overflow ballroom across the hall from the main ballroom. Much of the event will take place outdoors and allow plenty of time for you to mingle with your peers, with a one hour cocktail reception preceding dinner and a one and a half hour dessert/drinks reception following dinner. We will be livestreaming the programming and speeches from the main ballroom to the overflow ballroom during dinner, so you won’t miss a moment of the celebration.

We are excited to welcome fully vaccinated members of our legal community back in person as we toast to Chief Judge Barbera. If you feel unwell, are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms, or are Covid-positive, please stay home. We will share highlights from the event virtually for you to enjoy at a later time. MSBA follows CDC Guidelines, Maryland State Regulations, and venue specific regulations for all in-person events. Note that Prince George’s County is currently under an indoor public mask mandate for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, effective from August 8, 2021.
