COVID-19 impacted individuals, businesses and governments alike. Maryland has been proactive in passing legislation aimed at assisting Marylanders and increasing its own revenues. Effective on March 15, 2021, Maryland joined 30 other states, and expanded its sales and use tax to digital products and digital codes. The updated sales and use tax applies to e-publications, digital downloads, sound files, subscriptions to online content and software, etc. In the ever-changing tax landscape, businesses need to be aware of which products and services will be taxed to ensure compliance with their filing requirements.
