Wills for Heroes Event

Description

The Maryland State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section, as an affiliate of the Wills for Heroes Foundation, is proud to sponsor the Wills for Heroes program. We are looking for volunteer attorneys and notaries to participate in a Wills for Heroes event to benefit Charles County first responders on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the Town Hall, 305 Queen Anne St, La Plata, MD 20646. Volunteers will receive training from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and then will see clients for one (1) hour appointments starting at 10:30 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m.

The Wills for Heroes Foundation is a national non-profit organization that provides free wills, advance directives and powers of attorney to first responders, including police officers, firefighters, paramedics, corrections and probation officers. The foundation was started in response to the tragic events of 9/11, and is administered nationwide by local affiliate programs. This particular event aims to assist veterans in need of simple estate planning. At this day-long event, volunteer attorneys meet with veterans and use HotDocs software donated by LexisNexis to draft the documents, which are then signed, witnessed and notarized at the event. More information on the Wills for Heroes Foundation is available at: www.willsforheroes.org.

Malpractice insurance coverage will be provided to those who need it through a cooperation with Community Legal Services. No experience in trusts and estates law is required to participate, although we welcome experienced practitioners. To volunteer, or to learn more about the program, please contact Zak Shirley at zak@wzshirleylaw.com or 410-929-3565.
