Topic: Parlor Trick or Drafting Dynamo?  The Role of Generative AI In Estate Planning

Over the past two years, generative artificial intelligence has become the biggest story in the tech world.  Proponents of this technology argue that it will disrupt all sectors of the economy by automating tasks that were previously performed by “knowledge” workers (including doctors, copywriters, and yes, lawyers). Critics point to inherent limitations in the underlying models as compromising the reliability of their output and question whether this technology approaches anything resembling true “intelligence.”  Models such as GPT have demonstrated competence in tasks such as summarizing documents, drafting emails, and even generating programming code, but are only starting to be used in fields like law where significant technical knowledge is required.  This presentation will evaluate the recent history of generative AI and discuss its potential application to estate planning practice, with an eye on current and future developments (including ethical issues associated with the use of generative AI).
