Join MSBA for the 7th Annual MSBA Day on February 19, 2026, in Annapolis, as we advance our advocacy priorities and protect the legal profession. This signature event brings together attorneys, lawmakers, and advocacy partners to engage directly with the General Assembly on issues that impact the profession.
Why Your Participation Matters
Your voice allows us to conduct the most effective advocacy as we work together to educate and inform our representatives. Every year, legislators tell us about the importance of hearing from their constituents and the real world impact of proposed bills from legal practitioners. This opportunity to meet with legislators and share your story as a practitioner—whether you are a solo attorney, public interest attorney, managing partner, or corporate counsel—helps shape reforms and outcomes as the General Assembly considers thousands of bills during the 90-day session.
Recent Successes
Thanks to your advocacy and membership, MSBA successfully stopped a broad business-to-business services tax in 2025 that would have financially harmed Maryland attorneys, firms, and those seeking legal services. MSBA also defeated an unreasonable fee to access Maryland land records online that would raise attorney and firm overhead costs and increase client fees.
2026 Legislative Priorities
This year, MSBA continues to lead efforts on legislative priorities with broad impacts on the profession, courts, and access to justice:
- Opposing Taxes and Fees on the Profession: Efforts to impose unreasonable taxes and fees on the legal profession threaten to increase the cost of legal representation, creating additional barriers for clients—especially those from vulnerable populations. Such a tax would not only limit access to justice but also burden the legal profession with unnecessary financial and administrative challenges.
- Ensuring Sustained Funding and Education for Access to Counsel in Evictions Law: Stable funding for civil legal aid programs is critical for Maryland families facing eviction. These programs provide vital legal representation to prevent displacement and mitigate the long-term impacts of eviction. Advocating for sustained funding and continuing education is a key step in protecting the most vulnerable members of our community.
- Strengthening Judicial and Attorney Security: The safety of legal professionals is fundamental to the integrity of the justice system. Judges and attorneys must be able to carry out their responsibilities free from threats or harm. Attendees at MSBA Day will advocate for stronger measures to ensure the security of those who work in and support the legal field.
