The Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA), as the voice of the legal profession in Maryland, has long been a leader in preserving an independent judiciary, one of the three cornerstones of our democracy. Judicial officers must be able to dispense justice without fear of retaliation, retribution, or violence.
As such, MSBA stands with Chief Justice John Roberts’ recent statement rejecting calls for impeachment of duly appointed judges by government officials. As Chief Justice Roberts notes, “[f]or more than 200 years, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”
MSBA supports the separation of powers doctrine of three co-equal branches of government as the pillars of American democracy. MSBA joins calls by the American Bar Association and other Bar Associations nationwide for government and elected officials “to cease making statements that undermine our fair and impartial courts and the rule of law.”
MSBA remains committed to its core mission, including promoting the rule of law.
