Trials that Shaped Us: A New Podcast from Judge Stephen Sfekas

The impact of most trials is limited, but throughout history, there have been moments in courtrooms that have defined justice. In his podcast, “Trials That Shaped Us,” Maryland Senior Judge Stephen J. Sfekas brings decades of legal insight to the stories behind the world’s most consequential trials, exploring how they reshaped law, society, and human rights.

For more than a decade, Judge Sfekas has been a staple of the Judicial College of Maryland, delivering annual day-long lectures on the world’s most consequential trials. Previously, these deep dives into legal history were exclusive to judges and magistrates. Now, in a win for the entire Maryland legal community and the public at large, Judge Sfekas has adapted these scholarly sessions into a podcast series.

From the Bench to the Booth

Judge Sfekas brings over 50 years of legal experience to the podcast, providing a thorough analysis of the law’s evolution through the eyes of a jurist. Each series typically spans five episodes. Since launching last October, the podcast has already covered:

  • The Justice Trial at Nuremberg (1947): A harrowing look at the Nazi judges and lawyers who subverted the law.
  • The Salem Witch Trials: Examining the breakdown of due process and the influence of mass hysteria.
  • The Alien and Sedition Act Trials: A timely reflection on free speech and national security.
  • The Freedom Trials: The courageous legal battles fought by enslaved individuals against their masters.
  • The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson: Currently airing, this series explores the first presidential impeachment in U.S. history.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming roster for the next year is equally ambitious, featuring the Ku Klux Klan trials of 1871, the trials of Galileo and Thomas Scopes, and landmark cases such as Korematsu v. U.S. and Brown v. Board of Education.

Whether you are looking to sharpen your understanding of legal precedents or simply enjoy a well-told story of justice (and its occasional failures), “Trials That Shaped Us” is an essential addition to your playlist.
