AI Tools for Legal Billing

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) powered timekeeping and legal billing tools are designed to help lawyers capture all billable hours and reduce write-downs and write-offs. AI not only improves the accuracy of billable time, but also saves time on administrative tasks, ensures compliance with billing guidelines, and ultimately increases a law firm’s profitability through more accurate and efficient billing processes.

A few AI-powered billing tools for lawyers, listed in alphabetical order, include:

BillerAssist

BillerAssist markets itself as an AI-powered legal billing tool designed to assist law firms in streamlining their billing, reducing write-offs, and improving compliance with client-specific guidelines.

Key features:

  • Error detection: BillerAssist uses color-coded alerts to flag billing issues like excessive charges, block billing, or guideline violations as the entries are logged. It also learns from changes made to the firm’s billing by a human user.
  • Smart suggestions: The tool offers suggestions for task descriptions based on a law firm’s historical data to ensure consistency and compliance.
  • Automated training: It shows approved examples and flags problematic entries.
  • Client-specific rules: Custom billing rules set by client or legal matter to prevent rejections.
  • Flexible integration: Works with most billing systems

Ethical and Security Considerations. BillerAssist does not use a law firm’s billing data to train external AI models. Every billing entry and correction is logged for transparency and compliance review. Timekeepers, reviewers, and administrators have distinct permissions to prevent unauthorized edits or approvals.

Prices:

  • $29/month for the first user
  • $12/month for each additional user
  • No charge for inactive users or local counsel
  • Free trial available

Clio Duo

Clio Duo is an AI tool embedded in Clio Manage, designed to help lawyers automate routine tasks and streamline workflows, including billing.

Key features:

  • Automated bill generation: it can create bills individually for a specific matter or in bulk, generating multiple bills for different matters.
  • Smart task delegation: Lawyers can delegate time entry creation to Duo, which helps capture billable hours more consistently.
  • Billing insights: Duo extracts and summarizes billing data–like month-to-month comparisons–so firms can track performance and growth.
  • Client communication: It drafts professional billing-related emails and messages, helping support staff respond promptly to clients.
  • Secure & compliant: Duo operates within Clio’s secure environment, respecting user permissions, and maintaining audit logs for transparency.

Ethical and Security Considerations. Data is not used to train external AI models. Duo only accesses information users are authorized to view. All activity is logged for compliance review.

Prices:

  • Clio Duo is included with Clio Essentials, Advanced, and Complete plans, but not with the EasyStrat plan
  • Clio Essentials is $79/month per user
  • Clio Advanced is $109/month per user
  • Clio Complete is $139/month per user

Laurel

Laurel is marketed as ideal for law firms with fifty-plus timekeepers that are seeking accurate and automated timekeeping and time sheets, eliminating the need for lawyers to manually track their time throughout the day.

Key features:

  • Automated time capture: Laurel integrates with email, Word, PDF readers, browsers, and video calls, and uses AI to convert digital activity into ready-to-review time entries.
  • AI narrative generation: It creates compliant billing narratives using firm-specific billing guidelines, reducing rejections and write-offs.
  • Real-time compliance checks: Flags non-compliant entries before submission, helping lawyers avoid billing violations.
  • Operational analytics: Tracks productivity, tool usage, and work-from-home patterns to inform the firm’s administrators.
  • Profitability: Law firms using Laurel report an average increase of 28 billable minutes per lawyer per day, with profit lifts of 4-11%, as reported by LawSites.

Ethical and Security Considerations. Laurel’s AI is trained only on a law firm’s data - no cross-firm or external model training. Laurel is SOC 2 (a cybersecurity compliance standard/framework to ensure third-party service providers store and process client data in a secure manner) compliant. Laurel is also HIPAA compliant so it meets rigorous standards for data privacy and security. Timekeepers can choose which apps and URLs are tracked.

Prices:

  • Law firms must request a demo or contact Laurel directly to receive pricing.
  • Laurel does not currently offer a free trial, but free demos are available.
  • The more users equal higher costs, but there are possible volume discounts.

MagicTime by Lawgro

MagicTime is designed to allow lawyers to capture billable time without manual input or timers. MagicTime represents that it can capture every billable minute automatically on a user’s computer.

Key Features:

  • Background time capture: MagicTime tracks activity across Gmail, Outlook, Word, Chrome, court websites, calendars, and more, and automatically converts time spent into billable time.
  • AI-powered categorization: MagicTime assigns captured time to the correct client and matter using firm-specific rules and context.
  • Narrative generation: Builds compliant billing descriptions based on your activity, reducing write-downs or write-offs.
  • Auto-filing: Syncs with legal CRMs (Customer Relationship Management software) like Clio, PracticePanther, and Rocket Matter to file timesheets with a single click.
  • Custom Rules: Allows lawyers to define what should get tracked and what should not.
  • Legal Electronic Data Exchange Standard (LEDES) support, which is a standardized invoice file format in the legal industry. It also comes with Uniform Task-Based Management System (UTBMS) support, which is a coding system allowing lawyers to bill by litigation task, making it compatible with industry-standard billing codes for seamless compliance.

Ethical and Security Considerations. Only the individual lawyer can access their tracked data; the firm’s administrators do not have visibility. Magictime’s AI learns from a lawyer’s own usage patterns; it does not train on or share data across firms. It is built to handle sensitive legal data securely with SOC 2 & HIPAA Compliance.

Prices:

  • Free 7 day trial
  • Custom pricing based on law firm size and needs.
