The Elder Law and Disability Rights Section is pleased to present Disability Law 101, a program designed to provide attorneys, regardless of practice area and level of experience, with essential knowledge of disability law, public benefits, guardianship, and disability rights. This is the first time the section has offered this wide-reaching educational opportunity regarding a variety of unique practice considerations for people with disabilities and their loved ones.

More than 1.1 million adults in Maryland, or 24 percent of the state’s adult population, have a disability (CDC, Disability and Health Data System, 2022). With nearly one in four adults affected, disability-related issues arise in almost every area of legal practice, including estate planning, family law, employment, education, health care, and litigation. Even if you do not work directly with individuals with disabilities, your clients, their families, or their employees are likely affected. Understanding how disability status interacts with benefits and legal protections can greatly strengthen your ability to advise clients, anticipate issues, and protect vulnerable individuals.

This program features presentations from state officials and experienced practitioners who will offer clear, practical guidance and useful tools you can apply immediately. Whether you are new to disability-related matters or looking to expand your knowledge, this CLE provides a thorough and accessible overview of this important area of law.
