40-Hour Basic Mediation Training

40-Hour Basic Mediation Training, Your first step in becoming a mediator
Elevate your legal career and gain the essential skills to become a court-approved family law mediator with the MSBA's comprehensive 40-Hour Basic Mediation Training. This all-virtual program, held on January 7, 9, 12, 14,  and 16, 2026, complies with Maryland Rule 17. Led by experienced mediators, this intensive training combines interactive virtual sessions with practical simulations, covering key topics from conflict theory and confidentiality to advanced mediation models and ethical considerations. Participants will engage in realistic scenarios, providing hands-on experience in navigating complex disputes.
The schedule is as follows:

January 7th : 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

January 9th: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

January 12th: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

January 14th: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

January 16th: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Five hours of asynchronous learning of exercises and homework will be assigned throughout the period of the course allowing attendees to complete the full forty hours of the training. 

This experiential training will comply with the requirements of Maryland Rule 17 for circuit court mediators. Together, trainers Ellen Kandell and Toby Guerin, Center for Dispute Resolution at Maryland Carey Law, have over 45 years of legal experience as attorneys, mediators, trainers and professors. Learn the skills & theory of facilitative mediation practice. 

Seating is limited so register now. 40 hours (including 2.0 ethics) of MCLE credit will be offered from the surrounding MCLE states. 

 

Mandatory attendance policy

The MSBA appreciates the time and financial commitment required of every registrant. Because of the interdependency of each classmate’s participation in all lectures and role plays for this training to be its best for all participants, 100% attendance is required of each registrant. We appreciate your consideration and understanding of this policy. 

Refund Policy

Full refunds for a virtual 40 Hour Basic Mediation Training or virtual 20 Hour Divorce Mediation Training will be accepted by 12:00 p.m. 14 days before the first day of training. If a refund is requested after the cut-off day/time, the registrant will be charged a $150 administrative fee. Cancellations within 3 days of the training, you will be automatically added to the roster of the next available instance of that same training.
