State & Local Government Section Municipal Attorney Training
Topic: Municipal Financing Options
Municipal and many local government attorneys can't usually specialize or handle only one or two topics, but must often be prepared for whatever comes in the door. Municipal attorneys in particular have to be prepared to give advice to town and city staff on a wide variety of topics, from human resources to environmental management to contracts, and more, and must also know how each topic interacts and fits with all the others. Many of the topics are only briefly touched on in law school, as they are based on practical state and local needs and are not national topics of interest, such as torts and contracts. The Municipal Attorney Training is a statewide version of a program created by the Gaithersburg City Attorney's office to provide new municipal attorneys with a broad topical background and as a refresher or topical insight for those with more overall experience.
The trainings are not extended expositions covering every detail, but are intended to keep someone's attention for a short time, highlight legal elements they need to be aware of, and thus are 30 minutes or less. They all have a brief power point that includes citations and references, where needed.
