Panel: Walter Calvert, Esq., Partner, Venable, LLP, and Jay Maschas, Esq., Director, Hearing & Appeals Division, Comptroller of Maryland
In today's complex and constantly changing maze of state and local tax laws, it's hard to keep up with all of the taxes, fees, and compliance obligations that come with “doing business” in one (let alone multiple) taxing jurisdictions. However, these "unknowns" can have significant financial and legal implications. In Part 1 of our series, "Why Should I Care about the Things I Don’t Know About," we will dive into some often-overlooked yet crucial topics that arise in the District, Maryland and Virginia, as well as many other states and localities: Apportionment Issues, Unclaimed Property, Admissions and Amusement Tax, Sales Tax, BPOL (Business, Professional, and Occupational License Tax), and the Ballpark Fee. This session will demystify these concepts, explaining their potential impact on your business and why staying informed is essential. Whether you’re a business owner, accountant, lawyer, financial professional, or simply curious about these matters, this presentation will equip you with the knowledge to navigate these complexities and protect your bottom line by avoiding the interest, penalties and related compliance time, effort and stress that comes from having to deal with compliance notices and audits.
12:15 am - 1:15 pm Lunch - We will welcome Brad Fallon, Deputy Legislative Officer, Executive Office of the Governor as our special lunchtime speaker!
You can only see Brad in person - this will not be simulcasted to our online audience.
